Professional Microneedling vs. At-Home Treatments

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that has received quite a bit of celebrity buzz recently. This noninvasive treatment has become so popular because of its promise to rejuvenate skin and leave you looking younger and fresher. But not all microneedling is created equal! Here’s all you need to know about professional microneedling and why at-home treatments won’t give you the same results.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a noninvasive cosmetic technique that stimulates skin renewal by creating micro-wounds in the skin. These tiny wounds trigger the skin to begin the natural healing process, boosting the production of collagen and elastin. Because it penetrates the skin barrier, microneedling must be performed by a highly trained medical professional, not an aesthetician. It involves sweeping a mechanically controlled hand-held device over the skin to address multiple types of skin issues.

At-Home Treatments

Because of its popularity, there are countless at-home microneedling devices on the market. These needle-studded derma rollers technically work in the same way in that they create tiny puncture wounds on the skin’s surface. But they aren’t able to reach the same depth as a professional mircroneedling device. The needles on store-bought dermarollers are shorter and all one size. This makes them a lot less effective than professional tools because they can’t be adjusted to specifically address problem areas or skin issues.

Professional Treatments

A professional microneedling treatment penetrates the skin more effectively than at-home treatments. A professional device typically has needles ranging from 1 to 3 millimeters in length, versus the .3 millimeters of typical at-home rollers. Additionally, the practitioner is able to precisely control the settings on the mechanical device. This allows them to achieve the desired depth based on the patient’s skincare concerns. They may choose to treat problem areas more aggressively or make multiple passes to improve the results. This type of customization isn’t possible with at home treatments.

It’s important for microneedling to be performed by a professional in a clean, sterile environment. Since the technique creates puncture wounds on the skin, there’s a risk for infection and scarring when not done properly. At-home dermarollers can be difficult to thoroughly sanitize. At OBI BioAesthetic Institute, our providers use sterile, single-use tips for each professional microneedling session.

Benefits of Professional Microneedling

If you’re after that celebrity glow, you can experience dramatically better results with professional treatments versus rolling at home. Professional microneedling can be used to improve a range of skin concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and scarring. A series of treatments is often recommended to achieve optimal results. Microneedling is compatible with most skin types and can be used on different areas, including the face, neck, chest or hands. It also allows for deeper penetration of serums and topicals, making them more effective. Treatments are essentially painless and require no downtime, so you can get right back to your day.
